Book Review : The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Allow me to start by saying...
What a beautiful book. I highly recommend it!

Again, considering myself a 'beginner' reader, this book started off a little confusing to follow as the entire book is written in letter-format... To and From Miss Juliet Ashton. The time period is 1946, location London (and Guernsey, a Channel Island) the book is directly related to the the war (WWII) or moreso the aftermath of the war, stories being recalled and such. Ahhh! Such a brilliant book. Without giving so much away, this book shows what the power of reading and the power of books truly has in this world, and even more in the darkest of hours. If you are a lover of literature, you will love this book. I did. I really did. Such a beautiful story, I often found myself closing my eyes and imagining what the characters saw and felt, every day. Oh....
Let me share with you a few quotes from the book that really just layed onto my heart.

"I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in the books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true." -from Juliet to Dawsey (page 10)

"That's what I love about reading: one tiny thing will interest you in a book, and that tiny thing will lead you onto another book, and another bit there will lead you onto a third book. It's geometrucally progressive - all with no end in sight, and for no other reason than sheer enjoyment." - from Juliet to Dawsey (page 11-12)

"It is my belief that with two such men in the household and no way to meet others, Emily had to make Heathcliff up out of thin air! And what a fine job she did. Men are more interesting in books than they are in real life." -Isola Pribby to Juliet (page 52)

Check it out. You must! :-)
